TMJ AND ORAL/FACIAL PAIN
When it comes to pain and discomfort around the mouth, jaw, and face, there’s no better expert to see than your dentist. At Van Hala Dental Group, our providers understand how the complex relationships of your joints, oral function, and underlying risk factors can impact your level of comfort day after day.
Often referred to as “TMJ,” temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD, is a painful condition that is associated with dysfunction of the jaw joints. In many cases, side effects include:
- Painful headaches, migraines
- The inability to open and close properly
- Limited range of motion
- Popping and clicking within the TMJ
- Stiffness and soreness through the face, jaw, neck, and shoulders
Causes of TMJ
The first step to treating TMD is to determine the underlying cause. In many cases, jaw pain is triggered by a stressful lifestyle or injury, such as an automobile accident. Other factors may be due to the calibration of the bite. For instance, if missing or broken teeth have altered the way your upper and lower teeth function together, it can gradually strain and damage internal joint structures.
Treatment and Management of TMJ Pain
Full mouth rehabilitation or even orthodontic therapy may be recommended. In other situations, we may suggest a splint to reduce strain to the teeth, or even physical therapy. Injectables are another alternative. Fortunately, in most situations, TMD can be managed through non-surgical treatment approaches.
